Bereshit (Genesis)

Ch. 44 / 50
1And Yosef charged the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put the money of each in the mouth of his sack. 2And put my silver cup into the sack of the youngest, together with the price of his grain.” And it was done according to the word of Yosef, as he said. 3The morning dawned, and the men were sent away, they and their donkeys. 4And when they had gone out of the city, and were not far off, Yosef said to his steward, “Arise, pursue after the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good? 5Why have you stolen my silver cup? Is it not this one from which my master drinks, and by which he indeed nachash [divines/practices discernment]? You have done evil in what you have done.’” 6And he overtook them, and spoke to them according to these words. 7And they said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words? Far be it from your servants to do this thing. 8Behold, we brought back to you from the land of Kena’an the money which we found in our sacks; how then should we steal silver or gold from your master’s house? 9With whomever of your servants the cup is found, let him die; and we also will be servants to my lord.” 10And he said, “Now then, let it be according to your word: he with whom the cup is found shall be my servant; but you shall be blameless.” 11And they hastened, and each man took down his sack to the ground, and each opened his sack. 12And he searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest; and the cup was found in Binyamin’s sack. 13And they tore their begadim [garments], and each loaded his donkey again, and they returned to the city. 14And Yehudah and his brothers came to Yosef’s house, while he was still there, and they fell before him on the ground. 15And Yosef said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man such as I can indeed nachash [divines/practices discernment]?” 16And Yehudah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? Elohim has found out the avon [iniquity/guilt] of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s slaves, both we and also he with whom the cup was found.” 17And Yosef said, “Far be it from me to do this; the man in whose hand the cup was found, he shall be my servant; but you go up in peace to your father.” 18And Yehudah drew near to him, and said, “I pray you, my lord, let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Pharaoh. 19My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father or a brother?’ 20And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.’ 21And you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, and I will set my eyes upon him.’ 22And we said to my lord, ‘The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’ 23But you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’ 24And it came to pass, when we went up to your servant our father, we told him the words of my lord. 25And our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food.’ 26And we said, ‘We cannot go down; but if our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’ 27And your servant our father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons. 28And one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I have not seen him until now. 29And if you take this one also from me, and harm befalls him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to She’ol [the grave].’ 30Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad’s life, 31it shall come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die; and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to She’ol. 32For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father forever.’ 33Now therefore, let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers. 34For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me? Lest I see the ra [evil/calamity] that shall come upon my father.”
