After these things, the davar Yahuah [word of Yahuah] came to Avram in a vision, saying: “Do not fear, Avram. I am your shield; your reward shall be exceedingly great.”
Avram said: “Adonai Yahuah, what will You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”
Avram continued: “Behold, You have given me no zera[seed]; a servant born in my house will be my heir.”
Then the davar Yahuah came to him, saying: “This man shall not be your heir; but one who comes forth from your own body shall be your heir.”
He brought him outside and said: “Look now toward the shamayim [heavens], and count the stars, if you are able to number them.” And He said: “So shall your zera [seed/descendants] be.”
Avram believed Yahuah, and He counted it to him as tzedakah [righteousness].
Yahuah said to him: “I am Yahuah who brought you out of Ur Kasdim, to give you this land to inherit.”
Avram said: “Adonai Yahuah, how shall I know that I will inherit it?”
Yahuah said: “Take for Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old goat, a three-year-old ram, a dove, and a young pigeon.”
Avram brought all these, cut them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds.
Birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, but Avram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Avram; and behold, a great dread and darkness fell upon him.
Yahuah said to Avram: “Know for certain that your seed will be strangers in a land not theirs, and they will be enslaved and afflicted 400 years.
But the nation whom they serve I will judge, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.
You shall go to your fathers in shalom [peace/rest]; you shall be buried in a good old age.
In the fourth generation they shall return here, for the avon [iniquity/guilt] of the Emori [Amorites] is not yet complete.”
When the sun had set and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace and a flaming torch passed between the pieces.
On that day Yahuah cut a berit [covenant] with Avram, saying: “To your seed I give this land, from the river of Mitzrayim [Egypt] to the great river, the Euphrates:
The **Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites,
Hittites, Perizzites, Refa’im,
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites, and Yevusites [Jebusites].”
