When Avram was 99 years old, Yahuah appeared to him and said: “I am El Shaddai. Walk before Me and be blameless.
I will establish My berit [covenant] between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly.”
Avram fell on his face, and Elohim spoke with him, saying:
“Behold, My berit is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.
No longer shall your name be called Avram, but your name shall be Avraham, for I have made you the father of many nations.
I will make you exceedingly fruitful; nations and kings shall come forth from you.
I will establish My berit between Me and you and your zera [seed] after you throughout their generations for an everlasting berit, to be Elohim to you and to your zera after you.
I will give to you and to your zera [seed] after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Kena’an, for an everlasting possession, and I will be their Elohim.”
Elohim said to Avraham: “You shall keep My berit, you and your zera [seed] after you throughout their generations.
This is My brit which you shall keep: every male among you shall be circumcised.
You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your orlah [foreskin], and it shall be a sign of the berit between Me and you.
Every male child eight days old shall be circumcised, throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with money from a foreigner.
Both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with money must be circumcised. My brit shall be in your flesh for an everlasting brit.
The uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his orlah [foreskin] shall be cut off from his am [people/kindred]; he has broken My berit.”
Elohim said to Avraham: “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name shall be Sarah.
I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”
Avraham fell on his face and laughed, saying in his heart: “Shall a child be born to one who is 100 years old? Shall Sarah, who is 90 years old, bear?”
Avraham said to Elohim: “Oh, that Yishma’el might live before You!”
Elohim said: “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Yitzchak [Isaac]. I will establish My brit with him as an everlasting brit for his seed after him.
As for Yishma’el, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful and multiply him exceedingly. He shall father twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
But My brit I will establish with Yitzchak, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.”
When He had finished speaking with him, Elohim went up from Avraham.
Avraham took Yishma’el his son, and all those born in his house, and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Avraham’s household, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as Elohim had spoken to him.
Avraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
Yishma’el his son was 13 years old when he was circumcised.
That very day Avraham and Yishma’el his son were circumcised.
All the men of his household, both those born in the house and those bought with money from nechar [foreigners], were circumcised with him.
