Bereshit (Genesis)

Ch. 35 / 50
1And Elohim said to Ya’akov, “Arise, go up to the place Beit-El, and dwell there; and make there an altar to the Elohim that appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esav your brother.” 2And Ya’akov said to his household, and to all that were with him, “Remove the elohei hanekhar [strange/foreign gods] that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments. 3And let us arise and go up to Beit-El, and there let us make an altar to Elohim, who answered me in the day of my distress, who has been with me and preserved me in the way which I went.” 4And they gave to Ya’akov all the strange gods which were in their hands, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Ya’akov hid them under the terebinth tree which is at Shechem, and destroyed them to this day. 5So Yisra’el departed from Shechem, and the fear of Elohim was upon the cities round about them, and they did not pursue after the children of Yisra’el. 6And Ya’akov came to Luz, which is in the land of Kena’an (that is Beit-El), he and all the people that were with him. 7And he built there an altar, and called the name of the place Beit-El; for there Elohim appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother Esav. 8And Deborah, Rivkah’s nurse, died, and was buried below Beit-El under the oak; and Ya’akov called its name Allon-Bachut [Oak of Mourning]. 9And Elohim appeared to Ya’akov again at Luz, when he came out of Paddan-Aram, and Elohim blessed him. 10And Elohim said to him, “Your name shall not be called Ya’akov, but Yisra’el shall be your name.” And He called his name Yisra’el. 11And Elohim said to him, “I am El Shaddai; be fruitful and multiply; nations and assemblies of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come forth from your loins. 12And the land which I gave to Avraham and Yitzchak, I give to you; and to your seed after you will I give the land.” 13And Elohim went up from him in the place where He spoke with him. 14And Ya’akov set up a matzevah [stone pillar/monument] in the place where Elohim spoke with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured out a drink offering on it, and poured oil on it. 15And Ya’akov called the name of the place where Elohim spoke with him, Beit-El. 16And Ya’akov journeyed from Beit-El, and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Gader. And it came to pass, when he drew near to Ephrath, Rachel travailed, and she had hard labor. 17And it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for you shall have this son also.” 18And it came to pass, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni [Son of my sorrow]; but his father called him Binyamin [Benjamin]. 19So Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is Beit-Lechem [Bethlehem]). 20And Ya’akov set up a pillar on her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day. 21And it came to pass, when Yisra’el dwelt in that land, that Reuven went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine; and Yisra’el heard of it, and it appeared ra [evil/grievous] in his sight.” 22Now the sons of Ya’akov were twelve: 23The sons of Leah: Reuven, Shimon, Levi, Yehudah, Yissachar, and Zevulun. 24The sons of Rachel: Yosef and Binyamin. 25The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid: Dan and Naphtali. 26The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Ya’akov, who were born to him in Paddan-Aram. 27And Ya’akov came to Yitzchak his father at Mamre, to Kiryat-Arba (Hebron), which is in the land of Kena’an, where Avraham and Yitzchak sojourned. 28And the days of Yitzchak were one hundred and eighty years. 29And Yitzchak gave up the spirit and died, and was gathered to his am [people/kindred], old and full of days; and Esav and Ya’akov his sons buried him.
