All the Aretz had one safah [lip, speech] and one lashon [language].
As they journeyed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they settled there.
They said to one another: “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick for stone, and chemar [bitumen] for mortar.
They said: “Come, let us build for ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the shamayim [heavens], and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of all the Aretz.”
Yahuah came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of Adam had built.
Yahuah said: “Behold, they are one people, and they all have one safah. This is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they plan will be withheld from them.
Come, let Us go down and confuse their safah, so that they will not understand one another’s lashon.”
So Yahuah scattered them from there over the face of all the Aretz, and they stopped building the city.
Therefore its name was called Bavel [Confusion], because there Yahuah confused the safah of all the Aretz, and from there Yahuah scattered them over the face of all the Aretz.
